About El Paso

El Paso was founded in 1659 by Fray Garcia de San Francisco as El Paso del Norte, in present day Juarez, Mexico. After a turbulent start, El Paso became a part of the state of Texas per the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. The census reported the population as a whopping 10,338 people in the year 1890 – today that number is over 650,000. By the turn of the century, El Paso was changing from the “Six Shooter Capitol” as it was once known, into a modern, peaceful, industrialized city. Within the first 15 years, El Paso had it’s first electric company, electric streetcar, library, depot, and luxury hotel. By the 1930’s, El Paso had it’s own theatre, zoo, Hilton hotel, United States Court House, and the Sun Bowl football contest had begun.

After the turn into the 21st century, El Paso has continued to flourish and remain peaceful, being ranked the safest city in America 4 times since.
